Sovereignty in the 21st Century

at the Kellogg Center, International Affairs Building, 15th Floor

Columbia University, New York, 1-2 December 2005

In association with Columbia University’s Department of Political Science, the School of International and Public Affairs, the Council for European Studies, the Institute for the Study of Europe, the Center on Global Legal Problems, and the Columbia Political Science Students Association, SAID is convening a two day conference that will include panel discussions on topics such as state-building, US foreign policy, cosmopolitanism, global civil society, and the European Union. Confirmed speakers at this conference include Prof Michael Doyle (Columbia University), Prof Jean Cohen (Columbia University), Prof Jack Snyder (Columbia University), Prof James Der Derian (Brown University), Prof Andrew Arato (New School University), Prof David Kennedy (Harvard Law School), Prof Nadia Urbinati (Columbia University), Prof Simon Critchley (New School University), and Prof David Chandler (University of Wesminster).

This conference will be the ‘sister conference’ to a SAID conference at Oxford University on 29 October 2005. Many people claim that there is a divide between the British and American wings of the discipline of International Relations. These two ‘sister conferences’ are designed to help bridge this divide, by facilitating discussion and debate between the British and American scholarly communities.

  • REGISTRATION: If you plan to attend the conference, please fill out the registration form and email it to ahg2102@columbia.edu. Attendance is free of charge.

  • DIRECTIONS: A map with the location of the International Affairs Building is available here. Entry to the International Affairs Building is on the east side of Amsterdam Avenue at the light one block north of 116th St (there is no street sign there). Walk through the glass doors, keep to the left until you come to an atrium. The bank of elevators will be down a few steps. Take the elevator to the 15th floor.

  • ACCOMMODATION: Download here a short, partial list of hostels and hotels for those coming from out of town. We have not visited these establishments, so cannot vouch for their quality.
